Carol represents West Hallam and Dale Abbey Ward on Erewash Borough Council. She is also the county councillor for Breadsall and West Hallam, serving the communities of Breadsall, Little Eaton, Morley, West Hallam and Stanley. First elected to Erewash Borough Council in 2001 and Derbyshire County Council in 2004, Carol has served as Leader of Erewash Borough Council since 2017 as the Cabinet Member for Health and Communities at Derbyshire County Council from 2009 - 2013 and again from 2017.
