Sunday 14th December 2014 was the day the first train in over 40 years was planned to stop for passengers at the new, publicly funded, Ilkeston Station. To mark the occasion, Prospective MP for Erewash, Maggie Throup; together with Jessica Lee MP and a group of local campaigners came together to ask Derbyshire County Council: ‘Where’s Our Station?’.
Delays due to mistakes in the consultation have added months to the project which has been the top of the town's Christmas list for years.
Miss Lee, who has been instrumental in campaigning for a new Train Station for Ilkeston said:
“The need for the station is overwhelming and this was agreed by the Department of Transport and the Secretary of State when I put forward the proposal for the station. This is still the case. What I expect to see from Derbyshire County Council now is regular communication with both myself and residents of Ilkeston on progress made. I am determined to see no more delays on this project. The railway station will boost opportunities for Ilkeston residents and businesses alike: we will have our station.”
Prospective MP Maggie, who joined Miss Lee at the site added:
“Yet another year goes by without trains being able to stop at Ilkeston. Just think about the shoppers our town could have attracted from neighbouring areas, helping to give our local shops a real boost this Christmas. I am determined to carry on the campaign that Jessica has so brilliantly fought and will not rest until I see the first passages arriving on the new stations platforms.”
