Local campaigners have been left dismayed after Derbyshire County Council announced that it is to scale back plans for Ilkeston’s new train station.
Three new planning applications will now have to be submitted to both Erewash Borough Council and Broxtowe Borough Council before building work can begin, adding further delays to the long awaited station.
Changes to the original plans include:
• A smaller car park for around 90 cars.
• Shorter platforms.
• A single entrance and exit to the car park.
• Separate disabled and taxi parking area, cycle parking and drop off and pick up point closer to the station platforms.
Prospective MP for Erewash, Maggie Throup said: “Sadly December came and went without Ilkeston’s new train station opening for business. Now in the New Year we have been greeted with the news that Derbyshire County Council is set to cut the station build back.
“What the County Council don’t seem to realise is that whilst ever they continue to mismanage this project, they also continue to waste thousands of pounds of taxpayer’s money.
“Whilst shortening the platform and reducing the size of the car park may claw back some money in the short term, it inevitably means having to spend more to rectify these issues further down the line.
“I want to reassure local residents and businesses that I am in contact with the Transport Secretary to ensure Ilkeston gets the station it deserves, built and open as soon as possible.”
Local MP Jessica Lee added: "The further delays to Ilkeston station are hugely frustrating and, in my view, should and could have been avoided. Derbyshire County Council really need to get their act together on this important project.
“The delays have been woeful and avoidable. The railway station is going to transform opportunities for residents and businesses in Ilkeston. However, at the moment, people are hesitating about taking a job in Nottingham or starting a course because they're not sure when the station will open.
“Having successfully led the campaign to get the railway station reopened, I remain proud of this achievement and I now require DCC to do their job properly, and finish the building work."
