The great British tree giveaway!

It’s tree-mendous!  Erewash Borough Council is once again hosting its popular Free Tree event, the town centre giveaway when local residents can pick up some free trees for their gardens.

The council’s flagship Pride in Erewash campaign is behind the annual bonanza, which sees stalls set up in both Ilkeston and Long Eaton town centres – with residents of the borough able to claim up to FIVE free trees per household.

This year’s giveaway dates for the diary are:

  • Long Eaton – Old Market Place / High Street on Wednesday 27 November, 10am-2pm
  • Ilkeston – Market Place on Thursday 28 November, 10am-2pm

 

Anyone interested can simply turn up on the day and the trees – all native to the UK – are given away on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis.

Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure, says:

“We are delighted to be holding the free tree event again this year through our Pride in Erewash campaign, which is successfully spearheading our drive to make the borough cleaner and greener.

“The event is also well-timed as it falls within National Tree Week, the UK’s largest tree celebration, which launches the start of the winter tree planting season. The free tree event is a great offer for local residents and also a way of encouraging every one of us to plant trees. Trees are important to the environment and what we plant today will help shape the look of our wonderful borough for the next 100 years.”

The council’s Volunteer Tree Wardens will be at both town centre events to help with information and to promote trees, while Derbyshire County Council's Waste Exhibition Vehicle will also be there to promote recycling, composting and waste collections in Erewash.

As part of the Free Tree Giveaway, schools, parish councils, community groups and land owners will be able to apply for up to 50 free trees to plant within the borough of Erewash. These will not be available at the Giveaway Days and need to be applied for separately. An application form can be requested by telephoning Erewash Borough Council on 0115 907 2244 ext 3874.
